Knitting Abbreviations Ever look at a pattern and think "huh, what does THAT mean?!" If so, here is a cheat sheet of some commonly used abbreviations to help you out.
- alt: alternate
- beg: beginning
- cont: continue
- dec: decrease
- dpn: double pointed needle
- foll: following
- g st: garter stitch (knit every row)
- inc: increase
- kfb: knit into the front & back of stitch
- m1: make 1 (type of increase)
- patt: pattern
- patt rep: pattern repeats
- pfb: purl into the front & back of stitch
- pm: place marker
- p2tog: purl 2 stitches together
- prev: previous
- psso: pass slipped stitch over
- rem: remaining
- rep(s): repeat(s)
- rev st st: reverse stocking stitch
- rnd(s): round(s)
- RS: right side
- skpo: slip 1 st, knit 1 st, pass slipped stitch over (dec)
- sl st: slip stitch
- ssk: slip 2 stitches 1 at a time, knit 2 slipped sts tog
- st(s): stitches
- st st: stocking stitch
- tbl: through the back loop
- tog: together
- WS: wrong side
- yfwd: yarn forward
- yo: yarn over
Standard Yarn Weights, Gauges, and Recommended Needles
- Sock, Baby, Fingering = 8--6.75 sts on a US 1-3
- Sport, Baby = 6.5--5.75 sts on a US 3-5
- DK, Light Worsted = 6--5.25 sts on a US 5-7
- Aran, Worsted = 5--4 sts on a US 7-9
- Chunky = 3.75--3 sts on a US 9-11
- Bulky = 2.75--1.5 sts on a US 11+
